- 1 - Abstract: The present invention relates to a tunable mode converter. The converter is comprised of an optical waveguide formed in a z-cut substrate of birefringent, electrooptic material of lower refractive index, having a C3V cyrstallographic structure. A first uniform electrode extends along and partially over a portion of the waveguide. A second uniform electrode is disposed along one side of the waveguide adjacent to the first electrode. A third, finger electrode is disposed along the other side of the waveguide opposite to the second electrode. A first voltage is impressed between the first and third electrodes for inducing TE ? TM mode conversion within the waveguide. A second voltage is impressed between the first and second electrodes such that .DELTA..beta.=0 at the wavelength of interest where .DELTA..beta. = Image .lambda. is the wavelength of interest; NTE, NTM are effective indices for the respective modes; and A is the finger-to-finger spacing of the finger electrode.
