MATERIALS TRANSFORMABLE FROM THE NONAMORPHOUS TO THE AMORPHOUS STATE UNDER FRICTIONAL LOADINGS ABSTRACT A process for protecting an article from wear, wherein a frictionally transformable material is provided at the surface of the article, and then the surface of the article is subjected to frictional wear. The wear transforms the outermost layer of the material to the amorphous state, which is more wear resistant and corrosion resistant than is the material in its non- amorphous state. As the material is worn away grad- ually, the frictional transformation continues, thereby replenishing the amorphous outermost layer, so that a protective outermost layer remains. A particularly satisfactory frictionally transformable material con- sists essentially of from about 40 to about 75 weight percent of a first component selected from the group consisting of iron, cobalt, and combinations thereof; more than about 20 weight percent of a second component selected from the group consisting of chromium, molyb- denum, tungsten, niobium, vanadium, and combinations of chromium, molybdenum, tungsten, niobium, vanadium, and titanium; and from about 2 to about 6 weight percent of a third component selected from the group consisting of boron, carbon, and combinations thereof.
