ABSTRACT METHODS OF AND CIRCUIT ARRANGEMENTS FOR COMPENSATING CROSS-TALK AND/OR ECHO SIGNALS: An adaptive cross-talk and/or echo compensation cir- cuit is arranged on the four-wire (VL) side of a hybrid circuit (G) and has a variable filter (KF) and a compensation signal logic-linking element (K), the compensation signal being formed in dependence upon the difference value, possibly averaged, between the output signal of a decision device (E), which signal is formed following signal compensation and adaptive signal equalisation steps, and the decision device input signal value, the filter coefficients being set in accordance with the compensated received signal, or the sign thereof, if the difference value is great and being set in accordance with this difference value, or the sign thereof, if the difference value, possibly averaged, is relatively small. A compromise equalisation of the received signal can take place prior to the cross-talk and/or echo compensation. Following compensation, regulated amplification may be effected, if the setting signal for the variable filter is derived from the difference between the decision device output signal and the decision device input signal, and if the filter setting signal which corresponds to the compensated received signal is derived from the compensated and amplified received signal, then each of these setting signals may be multiplied by a factor which is reciprocally proportional to the amplification factor.
