ABSTRACT Disclosed herein is a hydrophilic polether polyurethane foam wherein at least 50 mole % of the alklene oxide units in the polyether segments of the polyurethane are ethylene oxide, said foam having an L-amino acid-producing microorganism immobilized therein. Also disclosed is a method for preparing the foam and utilizing the foam to prepare L-amino acids from the corresponding substrates.
