ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Disclosed is a process for the electrochemical roughening of aluminum or aluminum alloys useful for printing plate supports, in which a nitric acid electrolyte is employed. The nitric acid electrolyte includes at least one compound containing ammonium ions. Also disclosed is a printing plate support, roughened by the above process which possesses a par- ticularly uniform graining structure.
