ABSTRACT SOLID STATE ALKALI METAL-HALOGEN CELL A solid electrolyte cell comprises an alkali metal anode e.g. lithium, a halogen-containing organic polymer cathode and a solid electrolyte between the anode and the cathode. The cathode comprises iodine-containing vacuum cyclised polyacrylonitrile and the solid electrolyte is preferably lithium iodide and halogen-free vacuum cyclised polyacrylonitrile. Use of isotactic polyacrylonitrile, a method of making a cathode comprising iodine-containing vacuum cyclised polyacrylonitrile and novel methods of making the solid electrolyte cells comprising an alkali metal anode e.g. lithium, a halogen-containing organic polymer cathode and a solid electrolyte between the anode and the cathode are also disclosed.
