ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The present invention provides a process for the preparation of an 11-keto steroid from a 9.alpha.-halo-11.beta.-hydroxy steroid, in which the reactant steroid is heated, in an inert, aprotic, high-boiling solvent to a temperature in the range 180-350°C. The process of the present invention has the advantage that it has an exceedingly simple manipulation. The compound is heated in the solvent and then again separated from the solvent after the reaction.
