A magnesium oxide in the form of a fine powder which can suitably be used for manufacturing high density ceramics has a MgO content of > 95 percent by weight, preferably of > 98 percent by weight, a particle size of < 15 µm, and a specific surface area of < 20 m2/g according to BET, the statistic mean value of the grain shape factor of its primary particles being between 1 and 1.5 and the particles being coated with a surface-active substance making the powder hydrophobic.
