67487-377 ABSTRACT Disclosed is a dielectric wave guide having circular birefringence. The wave guide has a circular central area having a refraction index n1. An intermediate area surrounding said central area comprises a plurality of angular sectors alternating first and second types. The total number of sectors is 8 or a multiple thereof. The sectors of the first type have a refrac- tion index n3 which is constant while the sectors of the second type have a refraction index n4 which varies in substantially inverse proportion to the square of the distance from the longi- tudinal axis of the wave guide, n3 always being not greater than n4. An outer annular area (cladding) surrounds the inter- mediate area and has a constant refraction index n2. The wave guide is twisted along its axis. The sectors of the second type have an elasto-optic coefficient under torsion stresses which is different from that of the sectors of the first type.
