ABSTRACT: An organic solution of AlR1R2R3 (R1, R2 and R3: organic group or halogen) is reacted with water of the molar ratio of 1.01 to 1.45 to prepare a polyaluminoxane. The polyaluminoxane is mixed with a silicon-containing compound, and the mixture is spun into precursor fibers, which are calcinated to obtain fibers containing aluminum- oxide and up to 70 W% of silica. The alumina-based fibers have excellent mechanical properties and heat resistance.
