ABSTRACT BIOLOGICAL FILTER MEDIA Biologically stable articles are described which are especially useful as bed materials for treating waste water. Preferred articles are charred rice hulls which comprise silica and carbon. A process for charring rice hulls is also described comprising heating the hulls to a temperature less than about 1650°C. in the absence of oxygen.
