ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An incident light image is projected onto a CCD device through a colour filter array. The colour filter array has rows of colour filter blocks in a repeating pattern with a repeat of at least four rows, the filter blocks overlying rows of sensors alternate ones of which are read out during an interlaced scan. All of the colour filter rows forming the colour filter array have an arrangement of colour filter blocks with two different colour transmission characteristics alternately arranged, and are arranged so that not only is there a horizontal offset between successively scanned but physically alter- nated rows such as to enable separate colour signals to be derived from a multiplex signal provided by the scanning, but also successive interlaced scanning fields will provide similar multiplexed signals. Embodiments are described in which this is achieved in arrangements in which the outputs of physically adjacent sensor rows are averaged by charge coupled devices.
