Abstract: MIXED ETHER COMPOSITIONS CONTAINING OLIGOMERS OF POLY-- FUNCTIONAL PHOSPHINE OXIDES AND METHOD FOR THEIR MANU- FACTURE Mixed ether compositions containing oligomers of polyhydroxyalkyl phosphine oxide are prepared by heating a polyhydroxyalkyl phosphine oxide in the pres- ence of an acid catalyst at temperatures within the range of from about 139°C to about 200°C and removing water from the reaction mixture. When the reaction is conducted in the presence of an aliphatic, cyclo- aliphatic or aromatic alcohol having one or more hy- droxyl groups mixed phosphine oxide ethers of the added alcohol are formed. The mixed ether compositions of the present invention are useful fire retardant addi- tives.
