Polymeric quaternary ammonium borates in aqueous solution or inorganic solvents are suitable as agents to preserve wood, both for preventive protection of wood and to provide temporary protection against bluing. The polymeric quarternary ammonium borates are obtained by a material for preserving wood, wood products, and other celluloses products which is a polymer quaternary ammonium borate obtained by the simultaneous reaction of amines of the general formula I or II (see fig.I); (see fig.II) with 2 to 20 ethylene or propylene oxide and 0.6 to 1.5 mol boric acid, boric acid esters or salts of the boric acid, in each instance per mol nitrogen equivalent, wherein R1 stands for C8-C22-alkyl or C8-C22-alkenyl, or when R2 and R3 stand for groups of the formula -(C2H4O)xH, or -(C3H6O)xH, R1 stands for C1-C4-alkyl. R2 stands for hydrogen, C1-C22-alkyl or a group of the formula -(C2H4O)xH, -(C3H6O)xH, or -CH2CH2CH2NH2. R3 stands for hydrogen or a group of the formula -(C2H4O)xH, -(C3H6O)xH or CH2CH2CH2NH2. R4 and R6 stand for C1-C4-alkyl or a group of the formula (C2H4O)xH or -(C3H6O)xH, R5 and R7 stand for a group of the formula -(C2H4O)xH or -(C3H6O)xH, A stands for a group of the formula -(CH2)n-, -(CH2CH2OCH2CH2)n- or -(CH2CH2NHCH2CH2)n. X stands for a number from 1 to 55, and n stands for an integer from 1 to 20.
