A trocar comprising a first and a second housing, a stylet secured to and extending from the first housing, the stylet having a sharp tip at a distal end, a protective member slidably mounted in the first housing between an extended position and a retracted position, the member being disposed concentrically and arranged with the stylet, a spring in the first housing biasing the protective member outwardly of the first housing into the extended position, latch means in the first housing for locking the protective member in the extended position, and a releasing member movably mounted in and projecting from the first housing so as to operatively engage the second housing for releasing the latch means to permit movement of the protective member into the retracted position, the releasing member being adapted for motion relative to the protective member.
