A B S T R A C T A METHOD AND SYSTEM FOR PRIMARY FIELD COMPENSATION IN A TOWED RECEIVER FOR AIRBORNE ELECTROMAGNETIC SURVEY SYSTEMS An airborne transmitter transmits a primary electromagnetic field to a towed airborne receiver and to the earth. A secondary electromagnetic field induced by eddy currents generated by the primary field in conductive parts of the sub- surface, is received by the towed airborne receiver. Simultaneously with every transmission of the primary field a compensation field is applied to the receiver through a flexible tow cable. The magnitude of this compensation field is identical to the trans- mitted primary field at the position of the receiver but has an opposite sign, thus essentially cancelling the primary field received by the receiver. From the signal, thus obtained and representing the actual received secondary field, information concerning the conductive parts of the subsurface is derived.
