ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An inclined axes spin flanging head capable of flanging a necked-in container in a high speed operation wherein the container is made by drawing and ironing high temper material. Three specific improvements are necessary in order to produce an acceptable flange and reduce the number of cracked flanges to a commercially acceptable quantity. One improvement is a pilot device carried for free rotation on an axis which is coaxial with the axis of the container during the flanging operation. The piloting device guides the can into the flanging rollers each of which is supported on an inclined axis. The second improvement resides in inclining each axis relative to the axis of the spin flanging head. The roller configuration includes a large diameter rim and a smaller diameter center hub. The rim is splayed away from the hub at a preferred angle of about 120° and the rim is at a 70° angle relative to the inclined axis about which the hub is free to rotate. The radius between rim and hub is in the range of .070" to .090". The third improvement is a camming device used to move the inclined axes spin flanging head along the axis of the container into the container at a constant velocity. A specific cam profile is provided to assure that no acceleration occurs during the critical contact portion of the spin flanging operation.
