- 1 - Abstract In three dimensional image reproduction data on the shape and true texture of a surface of an object is generated by observing the surface in a direction Z to measure X, Y, Z and MR coordinates of a number of distributed points on the surface, X, Y and Z being mutually perpendicular directions, and MR being the measured reflectance of each point. To compensate for the fact that the values for MR do not truly reflect the inherent reflectance IR of each surface point, the MR coordinates are modified to generate corresponding IR coordinates by dividing each MR coordinate by cos a, where a is the angle of slope of the point relative to the direction Z. The angle a can be determined for each point from the rate of change of the X and Y coordinates relative to the Z coordinate at such point. The resulting X, Y and Z and IR coordinates can be displayed in a graphic work station to provide a two or three dimensional image viewable in an arbitrarily chosen direction, or the X, Y and Z coordinates can be used to form a shape replica of the object to which an image of the surface is applied using the IR data. In an alternative, the IR data can be further modified by being intensity biassed in favour of those points where a is greatest to compensate for intensity lost in a projection printing process used in applying the image to the shape replica.
