ABSTRACT A coupling mechanism for tranmission between a drive-shaft and a driven-shaft comprises a support housing in which are mounted, freely rotatably, two independent half-shafts in alignment with each other and connected together by an assembly of planetary and satellite pinions, the pinions being mounted in a casing which is independent of the said support-housing and carries two external flywheels coaxial with the said half-shafts, located one on each side of the casing, and carrying a series of electromagnetic coils fed from a collector. Each of the said flywheels is traversed, freely rotatably, by one of the half-shafts and the assembly also comprises two drag-flywheels, one for each external flywheel, made of a ferromagnetic material, each of which is secured to one of the half-shafts, parallel with and close to the respective external flywheel. The support housing also carries braking coils facing the drag flywheel which are operative to brake the output shaft and reversing coils facing the external flywheels and operative to hold the pinion casing stationary to produce a reverse drive therethrough. In a modification the second external flywheel accommodates a series of friction elements urged constantly, by springs against the first flywheel, the device in question being rendered inoperative by means of corresponding coils. In place of braking coils the second flywheel may act as a brake-disc, at least one caliper being arranged at the periphery thereof.
