ABSTRACT Tricyclic imidazolones of the structure: Image wherein Q is a divalent sulfur or oxygen atom; and n is 0 or the integer 1 or 2, a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, or a biologically functional derivative thereof having a (C1-C5)alkyl or an alkanoyl substituent on one or both the nitrogen atoms of the imidazole ring, enhance myocardial contractile force and are useful as cardio- tonics in the treatment of heart failure.
