ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A system and apparatus for helically scanning a magnetic tape having slant tracks wherein the slant tracks are divided into a plurality of segments. A helical scan drum has at least first and second rotary head pairs. The first head pair scans at least one of the segments of a first track while the second head pair simultaneously scans at least one of the segments of the second slant track of the magnetic tape. This system is particularly useful for utilizing a tape for portable audio use wherein the same tape is also useful for video applications.
