p-Nitrobenzyl 7B-amino-3-hydroxy-1-carba-(dethia)-3- cephem-4-carboxylate hydrochloride in substantially pure form is provided as a crystalline solid. The salt is obtained by reacting a p-nitrobenzyl 7-acylamino-3-hydroxy- 1-carba(dethia)-3-cephem-4-carboxylate with an imino chloride-forming reagent such as a phosphorus chloride, and, thereafter, with an imino ether-forming alcohol. The pure salt so obtained is useful as an intermediate for 1- carbacephalosporin antibiotics.
