Abstract A method and an apparatus for sensing arc discharge in a welding operation wherein an arc discharge device is connected by current feeding to a workpiece and to an article to be welded thereto at a work area. The magnitude of electric current passing through the current feeding lines is sensed to produce a predetermined voltage. This predeter- mined voltage is connected to a photoreceptor which is disposed adjacent a welding position for applying a voltage to the photoreceptor. A signalling device is connected to the output of the photoreceptor to indicate a valid arc discharge signal.
