ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A cable tensioning device for use on tire traction aids is defined by a hollow casing with an opening in at least one end thereof, a drum rotatably mounted in the casing for rotating around an axis perpendicular to the opening, a cable connected to the drum for winding thereon to draw the cable into the casing, a lever mounted on the drum outside of the casing for rotating the drum to tension the cable, and a hook on the outer end of the lever for engaging the cable in the tension position to lock the drum in the cable tensioning position. The casing can be a rectangular parallelopiped or disc-shaped.
