REMOVAL OF THE ENRICHED FRACTION BY SELECTIVE FREEZING IN THE SEPARATION OF LIGHT AND HEAVY WATER BY THERMAL DIFFUSION ABSTRACT OF THE INVENTION A process for the recovery of an enriched fraction of heavy water from a heavy water-light water mixture of arbitrary relative concentration including establishing a temperature gradient within a recovery vessel to cause heavy water molecules to move by thermal diffusion toward the lower temperature region of the gradient to establish a fraction enriched in heavy water, solidifying by freezing the enriched fraction leaving a depleated supernatant, draining the depleated supernatant from the vessel, liquefying the solidified enriched fraction, and draining the liquefied enriched fraction from the vessel. Enriched fractions from a plurality of vessels may be subjected to the process to increase the heavy water concentration, and the liquefied supernatant may be recycled to further extract the heavy water fraction.
