- 1 - ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A metal treating method melts the periphery of a weld and removes the molten portion thereof, to enable demounting of a metallic plate partially welded to another metallic member. The method comprises the steps of forming an electric arc between a hollow electrode rod and the metallic plate to melt the periphery of the weld with arc heat. The molten metal is then sucked up the hollow interior of the electrode rod. A rod at the end of which the hollow electrode rod is mounted, is urged resiliently towards the metal, while being freely movable longitudinally. A sliding block is urged in the same direction as the rod. The apparatus causes the sliding block to be engaged with the rod to withdraw the rod as needed. The procedure requires less labour and skill than former methods.
