ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An insulating window shade is disclosed in a window structure including a rectangular frame and a window mounted within the frame. It comprises a roller mounted horizontally in the frame above the window and a flexible sheet mounted on the roller such that rotation of the roller will wind the sheet onto and off the roller. Two parallel seals mounted in the frame perpendicular to the roller and adjacent the respective ends of the roller engage the side edges of the sheet. Rigid stays, not attached to the sheet, extend from side to side of the sheet and are in supporting engagement with an inner side of the sheet. Guides are disclosed for guiding the stays for movement parallel to the seals. The stays are movable to their extended positions in response to winding of the sheet off of the roller. When fully extended, the shade reduces loss of heat through the window. The shade also has insulating value during the summer to reduce heat loss, for example in an air-conditioned environment.
