ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A hot gas stream is progressively cooled in a casing having an inner jacket, an outer wall spaced outwardly of the inner wall and a heat exchanger on the outer wall. The inner wall defines an inner area through which the hot gas stream flows. An intermediate area is defined between the inner jacket and the outer wall. Heat from the hot gas stream is dissipated by radiation to the inner jacket, and then from the inner jacket by radiation to the heat exchanger, maintaining the casing outlet temperature within a predetermined narrow range.
