ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE This invention relates to a method for the production of phosphoric acid by acidulation of phosphate ore and to an apparatus for carrying out the method. The process of this invention comprises forming a slurry of a phosphate ore in an aqueous phosphoric acid solution in each reaction zone of a multi-zone reaction system. The reaction zones are arranged in such a manner as to provide for the separation of the ore solids into two separate fractions. One fraction consists essentially of a slurry of coarse solids and calcium phosphate in the phosphoric acid solution, with a minor portion of fine solids. The other fraction consists essentially of a slurry of fine solids and calcium phosphate in the phosphoric acid solution, with a minor portion of coarse solids. Thus, the coarse solids and fine solids are processed essentially separately such that each can be treated under conditions which are optimum for their individual characteristics.
