"CONSTANT PRESSURE PUMP" ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An improved pump is provided for pumping non- lubricating fluids at extremely high pressure while reduc- ing galling and wear on components such as pistons and cy- linders. The reduction in component wear and galling is achieved by modifying the piston-cylinder combination to provide a pressure area and a centering area that is axial- ly displaced from the pressure area of the piston-cylinder combination. The pressure area of the piston-cylinder com- bination is modified by reducing the diameter of the pis- ton or increasing the inside diameter of the cylinder or both to provide a .1 percent to 2.5 percent increase in clearance at the pressure end of the piston-cylinder com- bination than is provided at a centering area. The advan- tages of the invention are further enchanced by employing a release area disposed intermediate the pressure area and the centering area of the piston-cylinder combination. The pressure end of the piston-cylinder combination in con- junction with a release area further augments the advan- tages of the improved high pressure pump and provides a fluid relief in the event of seal failure so that a pumped non-lubricating fluid is not contaminated with a piston lubricating fluid. The combination of the pressure end of the piston-cylinder combination in conjunction with the release area allows the pressure end of the piston to oper- -39- ate in a virtually dry condition except for the fluid be- ing pumped by the seal on the end of the piston. The fur- ther combination of the release area with the centering area of the piston-cylinder combination operates to reduce galling and increase efficiency and component life of high pressure pumps. -40-
