PROCESS FOR SYNTHESIZING DIORGANOMONOTHIOPHOSPHINATES ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A new and improved method for making diorgano- monothiophosphinate compounds having the formula: Image which comprises oxidizing a secondary phosphine in aqueous media to form the corresponding secondary phosphine oxide and reacting the secondary phosphine oxide thus formed with an excess of sulfur and an hydroxide compound at elevated temperature for a time sufficient until formation of the diorganomonothiophosphinate compound is substantially com- plete. The new and improved process of the present invention permits the preparation of diorganomonothiophosphinate. The products are stable in aqueous systems and are useful as sulfide collectors in froth flotation beneficiation of sul- fide minerals.
