ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method of recovering natural gas entrapped in frozen subsurface gas hydrate formations in arctic regions. A hot supersaturatad solution of CaC12 or CaBr2, or a mixture thereof, is pumped under pressure down a wellbore and into a subsurface hydrate formation 80 as to hydrostatically fracture the formation. The CaCl2/CaBr2 solution dissolves the solid hydrates and thereby releases the gas entrapped therein. Additionally the solution contains a polymeric viscosifier, which operates to maintain in suspension finely divided crystalline CaC12/CaBr2 that prscipitates from the supersaturated solution as it is cooled during injection into the formation. The crystallized CaC12/CaBr2 is distributed while so suspended throughout the formation and is available to be dissolved in water that is released during dissolution of the solid hydrates, thereby forming additionally CaC12/CaBr2 brine in situ and extending the reaction further into the formation than could otherwise be obtained without the viscosifier.
