ABSTRACT Improved protection against dental enamel caries is provided by applying to the teeth and gingivae an oral hygiene composition containing, in addition to a pharmaceutically acceptable fluoride compound, a sufficient quantity of a pharmaceutically acceptable zinc compound so that the ratio of zinc ion to fluoride ion is at least about 7:1 by weight.
