ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A computerized information retrieval system provides a break-down of the major and minor subject areas covered by a group of texts selected from a text-database. Each text has associated with it a set of descriptive keywords, which may or may not be identical to a list of the words in the text. A user enters a descriptive word, or words in some boolean combination, and the system selects from among all the texts those whose keywords which fulfill the logical test constituted by the user's search request. A group of texts answering to the description having been found, the system organizes the texts into sub-groups defined by the keywords which the texts of each sub-group have in common, over and above those keywords which are held in common by virtue of all the texts conforming to the original search request. An additional method of analysis provides a measure of the degree of similarity between words or collections of words such as sentences. This provides a facility for searching for text whose keywords are similar to the words in a user's search request.
