Abstract Disclosed herein are compounds of the formula Image in which X1 is hydrogen, alkyl, alkoxy, -NL1COM1, in which L1 is hydrogen or alkyl and M1 is alkyl or alkoxy, or is -NL1P(O)(OG1)2, in which G1 is alkyl, or is alkylsulfonamide or hydroxyl, Y1 is hydrogen, alkyl, alkoxy, carbalkoxy, N- alkyl-substituted or N,N-dialkyl-substituted amino or -NL2COM2, in which L2 is hydrogen or alkyl and M2 is alkyl or alkoxy, Z1 is hydrogen, alkyl, alkoxy, -NL2COM3, in which M3 is alkyl, or is carbalkoxy or halogen or represents those atoms which are required to form a ring with Y1, W1 is hydrogen, alkyl or alkoxy, R1 and R2 independently of one another are hydrogen, halogen, cyano, nitro or -SO2U3, in which U3 is alkyl or phenyl, R3 is hydrogen or alkyl or, if R4 is a direct chemical bond, the two radicals R3 together are a link member and R4 is a direct chemical bond or a link member, with the proviso that at least two of the substituents W1, X1, Y1 and Z1 are other than hydrogen. X1 is different from hydroxyl, if Z1 is hydrogen, and Z1 is different from methyl, tert.-butyl and i-hexyl, if R4 is the direct chemical bond, -O-, -CH2- or -CH=CH-; and the compounds of the formula Image wherein Y' is -OC2H4CH(CH3)2, -OC2H4OC4H9, -(OC2H4)2OCH3 or -OC3H7. The substituents mentioned can be further substituted. The compounds can be used with particular advantage as image dyes, for example in photographic materials for the silver dye bleach process. Colour images with excellent colour reproduction are obtained.
