ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE N-methyl-S-methyl-N'-[2-(2-dimethylamino- methylthiazol-4-ylmethylthio)ethyl]isothiourea of formula (I): Image (I) is a useful intermediate useful for the preparation of nizatidine, a pharmaceutically valuable H2- receptor inhibitor, by reaction with nitromethane. This intermediate is prepared by the reaction of 2-dimethylaminomethyl-4-(2-aminoethyl)-thiomethyl- thiazole with methylcarbonimidodithioic acid, dimethyl ester in the presence of at least one mole of an acid per mole of the thiazole.
