ABSTRACT OF THE INVENTION "PROCESS AND APPARATUS FOR THE PRODUCTION OF A CAST BODY OF SILICON" In the continuous casting of silicon to form a cast body, particularly of rod shape, in order to avoid the formation of hair cracks in silicon which has been cast in the form of a rod, the rate of crystallisation is set at an optimum value, and the casting rate of the molten silicon is so matched to this crystallisation rate that the limited volume of the silicon melt contained in a mould body remains virtually constant during the casting process.
