ABSTRACT There is provided a monitoring apparatus and method for the trimmed edge of pre-cold rolled strip, the edge having a rounded portion, a cut portion and a fractured portion. The apparatus includes a television camera and a magnification lens system for taking a magnified picture of the edge. A television display device shows the magnified picture on a video screen, and there is applied to the video screen a grid on which the picture can be superimposed. The grid includes a plurality of spaced-apart straight lines, prefer- ably vertical, a rectilinear line perpendicular to the plural- ity of lines near one extremity of the plurality of lines, such that the rectilinear line can be brought into alignment with the video-displayed surface of the sample which is adja- cent the rounded portion. The grid also includes a sloping line cutting obliquely across the plurality of straight lines and an intermediate line intersecting the plurality of lines at points such that the ratio between (1) the span of each of said plurality of lines from the rectilinear line to the intermediate line, and (2) the span from the intermediate line to the sloping line, remains the same. In use, the operator determines where the sloping line crosses the bottom surface of the sample, traces upwardly along a hypothetical line parallel with the plurality of lines to see where the hypothetical line crosses the inter- mediate line, and then determines whether the top of the cut portion lies above or below that intersection.
