ABSTRACT An intumescent material and a method for its manufacture. The material comprises one or more organic polyhydroxy compounds as carbonific; one or more organic polyamido compounds in free and/or combined form as spumific; an ammonium phosphate as activator for the carbonific; and an amino resin as binder. The material also includes sodium silicate in an amount insufficient to prevent the material intumescing on being subjected to elevated temperature.
