A process for sizing paper with anionic hydrophobic sizing agents and cationic retention aids Abstract of the Disclosure Sizing agents which are novel compounds and have at least one anionic or acidic group which is optionally in salt form and at least two hydrophobic substituents of which at least two of the most adjacent ones are bonded to each other with a bridging member which has at least 1 carbon atom and 2 hetero atoms, at least one sulfur atom being present as hetero atom, in particular sulfimides or bisulfimides of fatty acid derivatives, are highly suitable for use, together with commercially available retention aids, in a process for sizing paper or cardboard. Typical com- pounds used have the formula: Image in which each A1 and A'1 is ethylene or propylene, A2 is unsubsti- tuted or halogen-, C1-C4-alkyl- or -alkoxy-substituted phenyl, Q1 is -O-, -NH- or N?, Q2 is -NH- or N? , each R1, R'1 and R2 is alkyl or alkenyl having 6 to 22 carbon atoms, each R3 is defined in the same way as R1 and R2 or is unsubstituted or methyl- substituted phenyl, y is an integer from 1 to 5, and each m, n, s and t is 1 or 2, s and t being 2 if Q1 and Q2 are -N?.
