Abstract of the Disclosure Infections in mammalian hosts may be treated therapeutically or prophytactically with an effective amount of at least one lymphokine before or after host infection, the amount being sufficient to achieve at least 50% protection of the host. Preferably, the lymphokine is TNF or a combination of TNF and IL-2 or TNF and IFN- .gamma.. Also preferably the infection is bacterial and is being treated prophylactically. The combination of TNF and IL-2 or TNF and IFN-.gamma. is administered in synergistically effective amounts.
