ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A speed change mechanism for automotive engine for operating auxiliary equipment at different speeds relative to the engine speed, an epicyclic gear train is interposed between an input rotary member and an output rotary member, a lap spring is wound around both said rotary members with rotation being trans- ferred from said input rotary member to said output rotary member by either a direct-coupled transmission system through the lap spring upon tightening the lap spring or a changed-speed trans- mission system through said epicyclic gear train by loosening the lap spring. An electromagnetic clutch is operated for tightening or loosening the lap spring in response to a controller sensing a predetermined parameter.
