ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Drilling fluid is diverted from a drill string by a sub mounted in the string, the sub including a tubular casing with a first, radially extending opening which is normally blocked by a sleeve slidably mounted in the casing. The sleeve includes a second, radially extending opening vertically aligned and normally remote from the first opening and a shoulder for engaging a ledge in the casing to limit downward movement of the sleeve in the casing to an open position in which the openings are aligned. A spring biases the sleeve to a closed position in which the first opening is closed by the sleeve. When a first ball is dropped into the casing, the ball comes to rest on a shoulder in the sleeve beneath the second opening. Drilling fluid pumped into the drill string pushes the ball and sleeve downwardly to the open position. A smaller second ball dropped into the string comes to rest on the first ball and closes the second opening sufficiently to permit fluid pressure to accumulate in the string to a level which dislodges the first ball. The two balls can then pass through the string to a ball catcher, which retains both balls while permitting the mud to flow there around. In a second embodiment of the device, a tubular mandrel extending downwardly from the open bottom end of the sub carries an in- flatable packer. Fluid discharged through the first opening passes downwardly through vertical passages in the casing and mandrel, and through one way valves into the packer to inflate the latter. By moving the casing and mandrel upwardly through the fixed packer, outlet passages in the bottom of the mandrel can be connected to the interior of the packer to deflate the latter.
