ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process for reducing the water content of a lower-alkanesulfonic acid comprising placing a mixture containing water and the lower-alkanesulfonic acid onto the internal surface of an evaporator column so as to form a falling film of the mixture on the surface, operating the column at subatmospheric pressure and heating the surface so that water is vaporized from the mixture as the film flows down the surface. Water vapor is removed at the top of the column, and lower-alkanesulfonic acid having a reduced water content is removed at the bottom of the column. By this method, the formation of carcinogenic methyl methanesulfonate may be avoided without need for a two- step purification process.
