SECURITY LATCH ASSEMBLY ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A security latch assembly for sliding closures is provided. The security latch assembly includes a rod member which is swingably attached to the top track of the closures and has two basic positions, an up and a down position. The rod member is an elongated rod that extends between the edge of a first of the closures and a side of the opening containing the closures across the width of a second of the closures and within the track of the first closure when the elongated rod is in the down position and the closures are closed. The invention includes an end member which is attached to the end of the rod member which abuts the edge of the first closure when the closures are closed and when the rod member is in the down position. When the rod member is in the down position, the end member lies in the plane of the second closure and thus prevents the second closure from sliding within its tracks. Some embodiments of this invention include a latching assembly which is attached to the wall adjacent the closures a set distance from the closures. These embodiments include an exten- sion member which is attached to the rod member and which extends between the rod member and the latching assembly. The extension member is compatible with the latching assembly such that the latching assembly secures the rod member in the up and down posi- tions. The latching assembly may be comprised of a pair of lock- ing pins which alternatively engage a hole in the end of the extension member to secure the rod member in its positions. In certain embodiments of this invention, the invention includes a pair of metal grillwork doors which are employed in conjunction with the rod member and end plate. The metal grillwork doors can be located adjacent to and parallel to sliding glass closures. In these embodiments, the rod member lies in the track of one of the metal doors and the end plate prevents the other metal door from being slid in its track. For added protection, a locking assembly can be added to one of the metal doors which attaches to the end member when the rod member is in the down position.
