ABSTRACT OF THE INVENTION The present invention provides a method or process by which the deposit of scale is inhibited or prevented, particularly alkaline earth metal scales such as magnesium hydroxide, which is a particular problem in desalina- tion units where brine temperatures exceed 90°C. In the method, a copolymer of maleic anhydride and certain olefins is introduced into the aqueous medium of the system, preferably in amounts of from about 0.01 ppm to about 100 ppm based on aqueous medium. The preferred copolymer is based on maleic anhydride and di-iso butylene, which has been found extremely effective in multi-stage flash desalination units.
