Abstract: The invention provides a novel process for preparing 1,5-benzothiazepine derivatives of the formula: Image wherein R1 is a lower alkyl group, R2 is a hydrogen atom or a lower alkanoyl group, and X1 is a hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl group. The derivative (I) and its salts have potent hypotensive, coronary or cerebral vasodilating or platelet aggregation-inhibiting activities.
