67369-458 ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Process for copolymerization of vinylpyrrolidone and maleic anhydride in the presence of organic solvent, catalyst and between about 0.1 and 1.0 weight % water. The use of small controlled amounts of water in an otherwise anhydrous process has a significant influence on the molecular weight of the resulting poly(vinylpyrrolidone-maleic anhydride) copolymer product. In general the molecular weight of the copolymer is inversely propor- tional to the weight of water added. Hence copolymers of varying molecular weights can be made by varying the amount of water used.
