ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE This invention relates to novel tri-substituted imidazole derivatives, of the general formula I Image in which R1 and R2 represent independently either optionally substituted phenyl, or one of R1 and R2, represents an optionally substituted pyrrolyl, furyl, thienyl, pyridyl or 1-oxopyridyl group; A represents a straight chain or cyclic lower alkyl group which may be unsaturated; and R3 represents a carboxy group or substituted carboxy group such as an ester or carbamoyl group with the proviso that if (i) A represents methylene or ethylidene, and R3 represents eth? carbamoyl then one of R1 and R2 is other than phenyl, and (ii) if A represents ethylidene and R3 represents carboxy or carbamoyl, then one of R1 and R2 is other than phenyl, p-chlorophenyl or p-methoxyphenyl, and to processes for their preparation. These compounds find use as skin phlogistics, sun- screening agents, and antiviral agents.
