ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A prosthetic device for forming a joint between a pair of human or animal bones has first and second fixation devices for attachment to respective ones of the bones and having respective first and second bearing surfaces, and an intermediate load bearing member having two surfaces, one surface comprising a thrust bearing surface for matingly en- gaging the first bearing surface and adapted to distribute weight and to transmit forces while rotating freely relative to the first bearing surface independently of the position of the first bearing surface. The other surface of the inter- mediate load bearing member supports the first bearing surface and is adapted to support weight and be subjected to force from the first bearing surface while experiencing relative motion with the first bearing surface.
